Mental Illness and
Higher Education

The social and emotional repercussions of mental illness and other cognitive disturbances stand to hinder individual success in engaging with traditional modes of higher education. It is not uncommon to find that these issues affects student’s quality of life, academic achievement, physical health, even their and overall satisfaction with the conventional university experience. The consequences are not only self-perpetuating but also stand to affect future career prospects.
Seeking access to adequate mental healthcare is a crucial and laudable step towards recovery and management; however, most times the damage to the educational pathway is often irreversible. In instances where education is interrupted to seek treatment, returning to academic life can be daunting. While the interest to engage in learning and succeed is there, the dominant feeling is often that of fear and the inability to keep up with the demands of day-to-day activities as well continue to care for their mental health.

Distance Learning

Merriam Webster defines distance learning as, “a method of study where teachers and students do not meet in a classroom but use the Internet, e-mail, mail, etc., to have classes.” In simple terms, distance learning is a method of learning where students learn remotely and do not interact face-to-face with teachers or other students.

Distance Learning is often misconstrued as a mode of learning for only students who are physically unable to be present at a university campus. However, not everyone enjoys traditional university life and those who look for other options do so sometimes by choice and other times, because of mental health issues.

Distance learning facilitates a healthy balance between studies and social life as opposed to the more rigid traditional higher education style. It allows students to be able to schedule their learning activities according to their daily needs and general life requirements.

The stress from conventional educational styles tend to put a strain on self-esteem and this can serve as a major trigger for mental illness, with distance learning, students are afforded the comfort of pacing stress-inducing events such class times and examination or testing deadlines. Not only does this improve overall productivity but is also gives students the ability to take a break when needed.

This self-paced mode of learning allows the learner to take responsibility for their educational experience still with the guidance and support of course leads. Each course and module is planned according to the needs of the individuals, alongside their strengths and weaknesses. Because students have a say in their daily schedules, their educational experience is often a true reflection of their desires and aspirations.

A “one-size-fits all” approach is no longer the societal ideal when it comes to higher education as distance learning offers a more fulfilling and self-assured alternative. However, in the case of mental illness and cognitive disturbances, there is still a need to maintain structure and provide additional assistance to every individual who chooses to go about their educational journey through distance learning.
