The EUCONA Academic Outline
EUCONA provides onsite support for otherwise disadvantaged distance learners. Our centre is set to provide an environment for consistent learning and is also equipped to accommodate social and emotional disturbances that are likely to interrupt traditional learning.
We provide thorough and well-rounded support that meets the needs of our diverse group of students. Specifically, our personal tutors provide academic support that enables students to meet the demands of their various courses.
At EUCONA we offer two entry pathways:
* Direct Entry
A student looking to enter though this pathway would have already met the entry requirements of their choice of course, received admission from the University and enrolled as a distance learner
* Preparatory Entry
• EUCONA does not currently issue certificates or qualifications. However, we can support students who wish to apply for Higher Education courses by tutoring them in the following basic entry subjects: Math, Writing, Comprehension, & Listening Skills. This is useful for students who are looking to take entry requirement tests like TOFEL and IELTS
• A student looking to enter through our preparatory pathway would ideally need help improving one area of the subjects outlined above and be looking to progress into the direct entry pathway after completion of the preparatory courses.
Courses
* Direct Entry
At EUCONA, we do not currently run our own higher education degree courses. Rather we provide admission assistance and educational support to students who are already enrolled or looking to enroll on external distance learning courses.
We have a comprehensive list of Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Associate degree programmes from universities all over the world; these include Management, Business and Psychology Courses. Please send us an email at [email protected] to view our entire prospectus.
* Preparatory Entry
We offer Preparatory Courses in:
- Mathematics
- Writing
- Comprehension (Reading) Skills
- Listening Skills
- Study Skills
Admission
Our admission procedure is designed to ensure that students at our centre are receiving the support they need. Although each student will be undertaking their preferred course, we work to ensure that the student and course are well matched both academically and clinically.
Typically, we will conduct an initial interview with a student and their caregiver. A decision will be made on admission to EUCONA as soon as we have completed the following:
- Admission to a Distance Learning Course at University of Choice
- Individual assessments such as writing, reading, and speaking ability
- Psychiatric and Psychological Evaluations
- Treatment Summaries
- Study Skills
Upon review of all this information, our educational and clinical teams can determine whether a student would benefit from enrolment at EUCONA.
The length of enrolment at EUCONA is usually dependent on student progress. Students are welcome to stay with us for the entire duration of their course. However, we appreciate that after some time at our centre, having gained the necessary skills, a student may want to transition back into a conventional education system, and we are able to accommodate that. For more information, please refer to the “Transitioning out of EUCONA” heading.
Term dates and holiday dates are usually set according to the course and students have the option to either return home during holidays or remain with us at our centre. All students will be required to remain at the centre during term time unless other arrangements have been discussed.
Academic Support Program
Our Academic Support Program is tailored to suit each individuals needs. We have onsite tutors and educational specialists to provide one on one assistance with academic work throughout the duration of a student’s stay. Our tutors are organised, clear, supportive, patient and encouraging. Because all our students will be struggling with one mental health challenge or another, we make certain that they are also well versed in utilising techniques geared towards a ‘special needs’ population. Sometimes this involves enrolling students in elective courses such as ‘study skills’ to ensure that they can maximise their educational experience.
Typically, our tutors will assist students with:• Coordination and planning of academic routines
• Course work fulfilment
• General academic needs
• Navigating the Individualised Education Plan
The Individualised Education Plan
The Individualised Education Plan (IEP) is a unique outline that we develop for each student. It sets out parameters for:
• Directed study and daily scheduling
• One-to-one assistance with academic work
• Meetings with clinicians
• Extracurricular activities
Under the Individualised Education Plan, we assign each student to an academic advisor with whom they are to meet once a week. Sessions will include discussions about academic concerns (tutors, plans etc) and general goals. These academic advisors are responsible for communicating that information with tutors and clinicians.
Sometimes, students may need additional support to teach them how to deal with course work. The IEP also sets out skill modules that students will benefit from such as:
• Time Management
• Organisation
• Concentration
• Note Taking
• Research Skills
• Test-Taking
Transitioning out of EUCONA
We appreciate that after some time at our centre, having gained the necessary skills, a student may want to transition back into a conventional education system. Upon assessment by the academic and clinical teams of the student’s ability to keep up academic pace and pressure and manage emotional expectations, our transition specialists with help to guide students through the process of continuing their course outside our centre, or re-entering into traditional degree programs.
